Associated Press in Mogadishu Friday March 24, 2006 The Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,,1738403,00.html Two days of clashes in Mogadishu between an Islamic militia and forces that have challenged clerics' growing power have killed at least 60 people, according to medical workers. At least 20 people were killed in fighting yesterday, while the toll from Wednesday was 40. Sporadic gunshots that began early yesterday escalated into heavier fighting later in the day in the north-east of the capital. Both sides reinforced their positions overnight. Somalia has been without an effective central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew the government and began fighting each other. |
